Orange Cinnamon French Toast

A thick cut french toast drenched in citrus flavor and smothered in tangy vanilla yogurt and sweet orange honey.

“Growing up, french toast was always a special occasion breakfast or when we were on vacation eating out. My daughter on the other hand wanted french toast all the time and it became a regular everyday breakfast item on the menu. This made me start experimenting because I got bored. This one is probably my favorite because it has such a fresh flavor and is not too sweet. I love the yogurt on top with fresh fruit.” - Tara

The Recipe

For the French toast whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, brown sugar, salt, zest and liquor until well combined and sugar dissolves. Place a sauté pan on the stove and heat on medium until hot. Place 2 tablespoons of butter and melt. Be careful not to burn the butter. While the butter is melting, dredge the sliced bread in the egg mixture until soaked through. Then gently place 2 slices at a time in the pan and cook until golden brown on both sides.

For the orange yogurt, in a small bowl mix together yogurt, vanilla, orange zest, and cinnamon. Make sure to taste after it is all mixed to check for flavor.

Place toast on a plate and garnish with yogurt, orange slices, powdered sugar and spiced honey. Enjoy!

Recipe Tips:

  • The yogurt I use is Icelandic Provisions. I really like how creamy it is.
  • If you have other fruit on hand don’t be shy. You can use berries, peaches, plums… whatever you have.

Make Ahead:

  • You can prepare the yogurt, the custard for the toast, and the honey the night before so it is easy to put together in the morning.
  • The oranges can be sectioned and stored in the refrigerator the night before so your garnish is ready to go. Especially if you're having guests this will speed up the morning,
  • I do recommend cooking french toast in the morning. Some people will say that you can reheat the french toast but I feel it is never as crispy, hot and delicious as when it comes right out of the pan.

Storing tips:

  • Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days in an airtight container.
