Old-Fashioned Ham with Mustard Maple Glaze

Old fashioned roasted ham glazed with a sticky sweet and savory mustard brown sugar maple glaze.

One thing I look forward to every year around the holidays is left over glazed ham for sandwiches the day after a big holiday party. A savory sweet and salty ham is one of the best things about holiday dinners. This glaze hits all the right spots. It is tangy from the mustard, sweet from the brown sugar, and maple syrup and then you get hit with the salty ham. It is a perfect balance!

What ingredients do you need for an old-fashioned ham with mustard maple glaze?

  • Brown Sugar
  • Maple Syrup
  • Orange Juice
  • Orange Zest
  • Honey
  • White Vinegar
  • Whole Grain Mustard
  • Cinnamon
  • Whole Cloves
  • Spiral Cut Ham

The Recipe…

Remove the ham from the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for about 2 hours. This will help the ham cook more evenly in the oven. Set the oven to 350 ℉.

In a small saucepan mix all sauce ingredients (everything but the ham) and bring to a simmer until the sugar is dissolved Use 1/3 of the glaze to baste the ham. Then wrap the ham in aluminum foil using 2 separate pieces that overlap at the top. This will allow you to open and glaze without having to unwrap the whole ham.

Place ham in a roasting pan and bake in the oven until the internal temperature reaches 100/110 ℉. This usually takes 15 minutes per pound. Remove the ham from the oven and increase the temperature to 400 degrees F.

Carefully unwrap the foil, place back in the roasting pan and use another 1/3 of glaze to baste the ham. Place back in the oven and bake until the ham begins to caramelize nicely (about 20 minutes). Remove from the oven and glaze with the last 1/3 of sauce.

Recipe Tips:

  • When choosing a ham, you want to determine how much you’ll need.
  • For a bone-in ham, I would suggest ½ pound of ham per person. Let’s say this year you’re hosting 10 people, that would mean you want to purchase a 5-pound ham.
  • When you spend the time cooking a ham, make sure you use up all of it. Save the ham bone and use it the next time you make a hearty soup or pot of beans for added flavor.

Make Ahead:

  • Although I would suggest cooking the ham the day of, you can bake the ham the day before. Either way, add the glaze to the ham the day of.

Storing tips:

  • Keep leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days in an airtight container.
